Getting Out Of The Lower Income Bracket
Researcher Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Andreß, Dipl. Soz. Anne Krüger
Project Description The project ties in with the poverty and wealth reports from the German Trades Union Congress (DGB) and the Deutsche Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverbandes (DPWV), which describe the number and socio-demographic structure of individuals affected by poverty and social exclusion. However, in our case we deal with the continuing question of whether or not, and under what conditions, these individuals can improve their circumstances. The focal point of our research is the relationship between own initiative and institutional assistance. The following questions will be considered:
  1. How large is the share of the circle of individuals who possess the actual possibility of exiting poverty and social exclusion?
  2. What socio-demographic groups are affected and which individual and social factors support (or hinder) such an exit?
  3. What role is played by an individual's activities, social network and the institutional support available (Job Centre, Social Security Office, Youth Welfare Department, etc.)?
The entire low-income bracket is taken into account. The study of the individual's behaviour is carried out with the help of representative longitudinal data, the so-called Low-Income Panel.
Funding The project is funded by means from the Centre for Empirical Economic and Social Research and a grant from the Hans-Böckler Stiftung.
